Part I

Over this last extraordinary year, many have been so mesmerized by the dramas unfolding before our eyes – pandemic, racial protests, the alarming rise of fascism, climate crises, insurrection -- that they have lost the larger perspective of how we got here. How have we arrived at this point, as a nation and global society? This is the question that we urgently need to be asking – if this is not to be a breaking-point, but a point of real transformation.

Nothing comes out of nowhere, there is always a bigger historical background, of choice-points, taken and not taken…the question is what choice-points we have taken -- wittingly or unwittingly -- up until now, and how can we take more conscious ones, with the wisdom of hindsight, as we move forward -- if we are to move forward at all, because soon there will be no choice at all: a radical evolution, or a great fall, the end of human civilization as we know it, and possible extinction.

If we are to make sense of our crises, this is what we must recognize: what we are seeing now are in fact not just aberrations, but extreme forms of trends that have been happening for a long time, leading up to this moment. It is very important that we not be diverted by the sheer horror of these extreme forms, but back up a bit and see the general direction our societies have been taking, that have made this possible. It is only with this larger perspective we can take our fate in hand, and consciously change direction.

So let us untangle, thread by thread, the web of illusions that has led us into our present morass, and open the way for a clear path forward into wisdom and renewal -- lightening our load, opening our eyes and hearts, and lighting the way to another future, stripping away the baggage and blinders of false, obsolete beliefs that are blocking our onward evolution. We cannot grow, or move forward, unless we know where we are, and we cannot know where we are without knowing how we got there. So let us look at the trajectory that has taken us to this crisis point, and see how we can course-correct, consciously choosing which course we do or do not wish to take, what vision we want for our future: what kind of world we want to create for ourselves and all future generations of life on the planet.

We humans have inherent wisdom within us; it is often latent, or buried, though, and we have to dig deep for it – beneath the layers of inherited conditionings, biological and social. Our evolution is the course of this discovery, the unveiling, of our wisdom – and we learn by trial and error, going down the wrong track (albeit a necessary learning curve) and then course-correcting when we hit an impasse. We have hit such a point today – few would deny this – and while many would ascribe different reasons for this (often opposite ones), it would do us well to take a step back and see the common patterns that have brought us here, and how we can move on together.

Drawing on the wisdom of hindsight, we can construct a better future. So let us see, step by step, what has brought us here. First of all… where are we? In the midst of the chaos, there seems to be one thing on which almost everybody agrees, and that is that we have arrived at a point of extreme polarization. Yet if we look more closely, we can see that it’s actually what both sides have in common that has kindled the divisiveness and violence that is now erupting.

The capitalist credo – based on separation, competition, self-serving individualism, unbridled self-profit and limitless growth – has been the basis of the US ethos from the very beginning, a foundation that could not but ultimately erupt and collapse. Colonialism, the decimation of native peoples, slavery and racism bred the fault-lines that are now becoming volcanic, the genocide and ecocide that are now coming to a peak, the cascading eco-social collapses that are now coming for all of us. How could it be otherwise, with a foundation so out of synch with the natural, ecological and ethical laws essential for sustaining a society and the well-being of the planet, the whole web of life that sustains us?

So while racism seems to be the flashpoint of our crises right now, it is what is even deeper, behind it, with which it is inextricably intertwined, that is the still deeper cause – the mentality of separation, enshrined in the capitalist credo, and accelerating to a lethal crescendo with its every new iteration. If we are to get a real grip on the problem, we must understand this connection -- and to uproot them together. (For more on this, see Part 3 and 4 of my earlier series, Beyond the Divides of Black and White Thinking.)

The Link Between Racism and Capitalism

People are not born racist or are inherently racist – it is economic factors, greed and competition for wealth, resources and goods – that makes people create “us” and “them” groups, and nothing plays into the hands of this better than capitalism, which glorifies competition, aggression, dominance, hierarchy, and winner-takes-all self-profit. This means that until our economic system changes, racism will continue unabated, and even dramatically escalate, as competition for scarce resources becomes tighter and tighter, the climate collapses, and people of colour are scapegoated and thrown off the sinking ship (precisely by those who are sinking it!)

This diabolical injustice will not turn around until we address our economic system, that has so powerfully fuelled it – and continues to do so – consolidating its power with ever more force and concentration in its late stages, as its hegemony is threatened. (Note, crucially, these patterns have not just come from Trump and his fascist followers, but from within the logic of capitalism itself -- whether red or blue…we will look at this more closely in Part 2: Polarized, or Too Much Alike? – The Elephant in Both Rooms is Neoliberal Capitalism.)

Trump’s brand of fascism is so alarming and extreme that, by contrast, people will welcome in Biden with open arms and a great sigh of relief, uncritically embracing what seems to be a return to “normal” but is actually a “new normal” of enhanced neoliberal capitalism – more of the same that created the crises in the first place. The answer doesn’t lie in neoliberal economics, nor in advanced technology – neither to the pandemic, climate crisis, or social collapses -- but in a deep change of hearts and minds, a deep re-evaluation of how we arrived here, and a deep change of direction.

Why is capitalism so linked to racism, practically to the point where the two are inseparable?  Because capitalism has tried to conquer nature, and the peoples who have lived close to nature, exploiting, enslaving and destroying them, from the very beginning. These two agendas are so entwined – the very raison d’etre of capitalism, and the entire Western materialist enterprise – that they cannot be disentangled, neither by mere reforms nor the accommodation of the formerly exploited populations within them (when we try to do so, as we have seen, the fault-lines only grow stronger). It is only when we begin to see the lethal consequences of this entanglement – for all of us, and all of life on this planet – that we begin to disentangle it, and clear the way for a wholly new vision and values, a future that can rise like a Phoenix from the ashes.

There is a mechanism in our psychology that makes us human beings prone to a lethal short-sightedness. We judge things relative to the next closest thing (or the last thing that happened in time), not in the perspective of the bigger picture. And these days our attention spans (and historical memories) are becoming shorter and shorter, as crisis after crisis hits us. We are so busy dodging bullets, so lost in the cross-fire, we don’t have the time or space (or mental or emotional bandwidth) to step back and see what is actually behind it all, or where it is all heading. This is why Biden, and the corporate neoliberal agenda, is being welcomed as some mythical source of salvation today – relative to the hell we’ve just been through – when in fact it has little to offer but more of the same that has so misguided and confused us, led to this very impasse.

If we are to move through this impasse, we need to step back and see the bigger perspective – only then can we see new possibilities, new horizons that can open up for us on the other side of our own blinders.  Only once we have opened our eyes, beyond the delusions that have mired us, can we begin to chart new paths to the other side of our crises, and through, that we cannot yet imagine -- new visions can open up for us and blossom. But first the delusions have to go. We will look at this more closely in Part II.

Part 2

Polarized -- Or Too Much Alike?

The Elephant in Both Rooms is Neo-Liberal Capitalism

People say the US is divided but it’s actually what both sides have in common that makes them both so incapable of rising to the present crises -- indeed, the very cause of them – the neo-liberal capitalist system and the values that underlie it. The two big factions in the US – the Republicans and the corporate Democrats (i.e., the Trumps and the Bidens; and their world-wide cohorts, the rightwing strongmen and the neoliberal corporate technocrats) are both located squarely within the neoliberal capitalist system, a context which has been a given since the 1980’s, and has rarely been questioned, either in mainstream American society or its global empire.

Unfortunately, both sides, red and blue (and their global counterparts) have fallen prey to the same delusion – that the capitalist system, predicated on individual self-profit, competition, violence, extraction, perpetual growth and perpetual war, limitless greed and egregious injustice – can ever result in a world of sanity, peace, happiness, harmony, fulfilment or freedom. We only have to look around to see what the actual results have been: climate destruction, world-wide pandemic, social and ecological collapses, driving us towards our extinction -- can there even be any question here, what more evidence do we need?

Red and Blue – Polarized, or Deadlocked by the Same Delusion?

How have we missed this, when in fact it is staring us in the face? – capitalism itself, especially in its advanced, neo-liberal technocratic state, is the elephant in the room – an elephant so huge it straddles the apparent divisions that have preoccupied our attention.

While we’ve been hurtling to our extinction, we’ve been diverted by a political rift, between the two mainstream parties, left and right; but in fact on this crucial issue, both sides are on the same side. The entire political spectrum, both in the US and world-wide, over the last forty years of neo-liberal capitalism’s rise, has slid to the right, and progressive voices aggressively side-lined, until there is little left left. Both sides jumped on the “there is no alternative” bandwagon – and have kept on riding it, even to the death.

Capitalism, when it hits crisis mode, inevitably doubles down on its aggression – instead of hitting the brakes, it floors the accelerator. The truth is that right now we have two versions of late-stage neo-liberal capitalism contending with each other for supremacy: the obvious right-wing, strong-men, strong-armed fascist style, exemplified by Trump and cronies; and the smoother neo-liberal techno-capitalists, who let advanced technology – IT, AI, genetic modification, and (courtesy of climate collapses and pandemics) increasing surveillance and control, including global medical/martial law -- do the dirty work of totalitarian takeover for them while they keep their (yes, also white male billionaires’) hands clean.

Either way, the result is the same: we have lost our power. Don’t be diverted by this apparent ping-pong game between two teams much the same -- a smokescreen for the real battle of Armageddon being waged, in real-time, for our freedoms, our rights, our lives, the future of society and our very survival.

People think we’ve dodged a bullet by getting rid of Trump, and are celebrating the revival of democracy, freedom and human rights, but look again – another form of tyranny is rising on the horizon. More cleverly hidden (dubbed as the “new normal”) but just as ominous and alarming. In fact, it’s hidden in plain sight, but many are so relieved to welcome Biden and the vaccine as our promised salvation, they’re totally missing the signs, mesmerized by a mirage.

Many feared a fascist resurgence in Trump and other right-wing movements around the world, but an ever-tightening regime of techno-capitalist medical/martial global law (fast-tracked at “warp speed” now by the pandemic) is only another potential form of rising authoritarianism in disguise -- another wolf, in sheep’s clothing. Smoother to be sure, not so evident to the unsuspecting eye (even those with the best of intentions are often missing it) -- more insidious, masked, but just as potentially dangerous, tyrannical and destructive -- because no matter how different the two may superficially seem, they are both, as we have seen, sprouted from the same seed, neo-liberal capitalism and its winner-take-all memes of power and domination.

So let us not celebrate a premature victory over fascism – it is coming at us another way. Let us see this more hidden brand for what it is, before it is too late, and rise up for true democracy, true power to us, the people, to make the life-and-death decisions that are facing us at this crucial inflection point for humanity, the planet and all future generations.

The Fallacies We Need to Debunk to Make Sense of Our Current Crises

As we saw in Part 1, there are several fallacies, which have grown up historically and in our own minds, that we need to unpack before we can understand the crises in which we are enmeshed today, if we are to take wise action to address them. Otherwise we are simply thrashing about in a web of illusions, blindsided by our confusion, binding ourselves tighter and tighter. So let us look at these fallacies, layer by layer, and unravel them, exposing the roots of our present confusion, and the deeper truths that can open the way to solutions.

If the Problem on Both Sides is Neo-Liberal Capitalism, What’s The Problem with Neo-Liberal Capitalism?: The Stages of Capitalism and How It Has Led to our Crises

There are at least three levels/phases to capitalism and its evolution, and inherent flaws in each, which have led us, step by step, to this point, so let us parse them out.

First, its very premises are antithetical to the values needed for a harmonious and sustainable society: competition, self-interest and self-profit, limitless growth and limitless greed, regardless of the consequences to others and the planet. It is self-evident that such values cannot lead to peace or harmony, much less the most basic sanity and sustainability.

Contravening the most basic laws of natural and human ecology – interconnection, interdependence, reciprocity and cooperation – it cannot but lead to disaster.

Second – the neo-liberal, de-regulated late-stage version that took over in the 80’s, combined with rapidly advancing technology, fully globalized its hold, while ripping away all safety nets, both for people and planet, causing egregious inequality, triggering cascading climate disasters and newly erupting pandemics.

Third, the stage we’ve arrived at today, with the capitalists at the top of their game, further capitalizing on the crises they’ve caused, using them to justify ever-more draconian high-tech measures of surveillance and control. Right now the social media, IT and medical/pharmaceutical magnates are operating in a virtually airtight alliance, suppressing and censoring all protest, with the whole world, locked down in stranglehold, helpless to do anything about it.

Why Even the Democratic Party is No Longer Democratic: Late-Stage Capitalism and Democracy are Inherently in Conflict

This is why the Democrats, once the party of democracy, has in reality ceased to be so: because neo-liberal capitalism and democracy are inherently in conflict. The two simply cannot co-exist, and as capitalism advances, it inevitably beats out democracy. At one time the Democrats were seen to be the party of the people, and the Republicans the party of business and elite corporate interests, but neo-liberal capitalism, in the technocratic age, has increasingly blurred those distinctions.

What was once the party of democracy has become a party of technocracy – and technocracy is not democratic – in fact, it is its antithesis. Technocracy is clearly heading in an increasingly authoritarian direction, with decisions concerning our personal lives, and the fate of all humanity, made by “experts” and “authorities” to which we are not privy. And while IT nerds may be experts at technology, they are often famously short on humanity – which makes the massive influence they have over all our lives now every bit as pernicious (even more so, because it is hidden) as the right-wing, classical fascism we can more easily recognize and combat.

The Potent Combo of Advanced Technology and Neoliberal Economics Drives Capitalism in an Ever-More Totalitarian Direction

In fact it is not red and blue which are poles apart at this point but capitalism and democracy; and both red and blue are on the capitalist side, with democracy left by the wayside. Here again there are historical layers of illusion that have long cemented the idea that capitalism and democracy inevitably go together, when in fact it’s just the opposite: as capitalism advances, especially as it is coupled with advancing technology, it becomes increasingly inimical to both democracy and humanity.

Why is this so? First, because the sophistication of the technology is beyond the understanding or control of the general population, and secondly because advancing technology, by definition, is unnatural, and artificially mutates what is natural and human. Because we as humans are intrinsically part of nature, it is foolish to think we can tamper endlessly with her laws, and not pay the consequences – spiralling into self-destruction as we keep upping the ante.

In its early stages, capitalism and democracy appear to be compatible, as capitalism seems to offer a level playing field, an equal opportunity to all to get ahead and prosper. In fact we know very well, however, that that even then this was not the case; from the beginning it was built on genocide and slavery, and was essentially a way for already-privileged, white European males to capitalise further on that privilege. As capitalism “grows”, this false promise at its very basis, and the reality behind it, becomes increasingly evident, starker and exposed – as wealth, resources and power are siphoned off to the top at an exponentially growing rate, leaving people and planet destitute. In the end the internal logic of capitalism -- of unlimited greed and self-profit  for the few at the expense of the many -- proves itself a fatally flawed one, as it hits its inevitable limit, exploding in ecological and social collapses.

Contrary to what many people think, then, not only do capitalism and democracy not go together, but capitalism, as it advances, inevitably crushes democracy … If we do not see this – the increasingly antithetical nature of capitalism and democracy as capitalism advances, we ourselves are inevitably mired in confusion, and cannot make wise choices – hence the chaos all around us (and within us) today.

In fact it is very simple: greed and equality do not go together. We have to decide: endless ambition and “growth”, hoisting ourselves on our own petard: or radically revamping our systems, to serve the real needs of all of us, and all life on this planet. The truth is because we are all connected, we cannot survive without each other. If we do not wake up to this now, we will all go down. Much as we may want to evade it, this truth has become inescapable.

Part 3

Why Advanced Neoliberal Techno-Capitalism Is in Inevitable Conflict with Democracy and Humanity

We have already seen that, contrary to what many people think, democracy and advanced capitalism do not go together. In fact, the premise of democracy is that “we are all in this together” – that we share power equally over the decisions that concern all our lives, as well as resources and wealth that conduce to our common human well-being; yet capitalism, especially as it advances, creates growing inequality, taking away the people’s power and handing it to the elites. This disparity (and the myth it exposes) becomes even more glaring as advancing capitalism converges with advancing technology, exponentially augmenting the power of both, and conversely, reducing to practically nothing the power of the people.

So another fallacy we need to debunk is that advancing technology gives us more power over our lives; in fact, the opposite is true. It gives more power to the “experts” and authorities, working behind closed doors, for high-finance interests -- a techno-authoritarian order wielding a tight combination of technological, financial and political power (because it also buys off the government), robbing the people of the power to make the decisions that vitally affect our lives, and the larger directions of society we live in.

How Neoliberal Techno-Capitalism Leads to Exponentially Widening Disparities of Power

In all three ways – politically, economically and technologically -- neoliberal capitalist technocracy inevitably leads to a huge disparity of power, with the pyramid growing ever-sharper at the top and flatter at the bottom. Why is this so? Because advanced technology, by definition, cannot be understood by the common public, it takes away our power. Right now it is the IT experts and nerds of Silicon Valley (technically savvy but famously short on basic social intelligence) that are determining our fate, without us knowing anything about it or having any say in their decisions.

Furthermore, in a capitalist context, where the unabashed motive is self-profit and not the well-being of the public, or planet, it is obvious whom those decisions being made at high levels, in tech labs and private corporate board rooms, are serving. This means a techno-capitalist order is not only antithetical to democracy, but inevitably veers into what we could call -- and yes, with justifiable alarm -- a new kind of techno-totalitarianism.

COVID has been the perfect vehicle for all of this to fast-forward. At the same time lockdowns and social distancing are keeping us from each other, we are subjected, in our own homes, to the direct programming of the social media, promoting the agendas that serve them and censoring the rest, via their own “fact-checks” (which of course confirm their own biases.) In this way, any protest about the neoliberal powers-that-be and their pandemic agendas are silenced and suppressed, both online and on the streets – classical old fascistic tactics (silence, divide and disappear dissenters), heightened by new IT capacities (keep them chained, singly, to the social media that both propagandize and spy on them.)

(In a chilling article, Naomi Klein describes how the techno-capitalist order is using the pandemic as the most advanced form of “disaster capitalism” yet: a virtual takeover of real life -- and every aspect of our lives -- by billionaire CEO’s locking in this grand opportunity to gain total control over people and planet, in the name of our protection.)

The “Free Market vs. Government” Dichotomy Has Become a Specious One: We Are Governed By a Big-Business Plutocracy

Just like “red” versus “blue”, so the “free-market” versus “government” dichotomy has been increasingly blurred by the neo-liberal consensus; a once-valid distinction has become a specious one, a debate over which we lose much heat and energy while resolving nothing. The truth is the “free-market” and the “state” have both been subsumed by big business, swallowed up by the same behemoth, a revolving-door plutocracy.

In fact, the government and market are one, wed hand in glove, both ruled by the corporations, with their enormous power. It is commonly held that the right favours the freedom of the market, businesses, while the left favours the government, public programs, welfare. At one time this was indeed the case, but under neo-liberalism, these lines have increasingly faded. Both left-wing and right-wing administrations have been bought off by the corporate state, so whether you vote for right or left you’re voting for corporatocracy. Decade by decade, it only grows stronger and stronger, so it is only a sleight of hand that it seems to be passing hands each time the parties change places (of course there are social distinctions, but the economic ones have become increasingly minimal.)

It is not a question of whether the government has more power or business -- that tedious and outworn debate is at this point just a smokescreen -- because the two have long fused, becoming  virtually indistinguishable. We, the public, are overpowered by both, the corporate-technocratic state, which is working only for its own sky-rocketing profits, sacrificing people and planet for its own unlimited power and greed in the process. In the win-lose game of capitalism over democracy, the 1% has won.

Thanks to neoliberalism’s aggressive push for deregulation, decimating public safety nets and environmental protections over the last four decades, all checks and balances are gone, and business interests have swamped public ones, the care and welfare of people and planet.  Just like the old distinction between right and left, the distinction (and creative tension) between the market and state has gone by the wayside, as big-business, corporate interests have totally taken over, with no holds barred at this point.

People are no longer free (even ostensibly) to provide for themselves and families simply on the “free market”, nor receive the protection of a benevolent state. Our freedoms and rights, opportunities and protections have been usurped by a small elite that monopolizes all such rights -- all access to resources, power, wealth and freedom -- to themselves alone.
Even the word “state” has little meaning now, because this take-over is global; neoliberal globalization has, in the name of its own limitless growth, bulldozed through everything in its path, knocking down national borders. There is only one global state now (or will be, if we don’t stop it) and that is the state of big-business, corporate plutocracy -- limitless, globalized techno-fascism, reigning over our minds, bodies, spirits, with an ever-tighter, ever-more ubiquitous  fist.

Now you may conclude (depending on what from angle you are looking) that I am either a communist, a libertarian, or a Luddite (if you haven’t already decided that I’m a conspiracy theorist, in which case you would no longer be reading this!) So I will say it clearly: there is nothing inherently wrong with either free-markets, public governance or technology; what matters is whose hands they are in, and for what motives they are used.

Both the “free-market” and “government by and for the people” have their virtues, and both can go together; nor, in order to be sustainable, do we need to go back to living like cavemen. But we urgently need to change the forms, creating new social visions and new social contracts that transcend the old polarities. The “free market”, for instance, can operate within a vision set by the people themselves for what roles, goods and services are desired by all, and harm no-one or the planet; public parameters and private talents can mutually determine and enhance each other. Likewise, technology can also serve the people, when its uses and directions are determined by the people themselves; it is not inherently inimical, only in the context of an unjust and exploitative economic system.

We are called to find a new balance between freedom and structure, the individual and the collective, the future and past wisdom, that is both creative and regenerative; to evolve to the highest potentials of humanity, not become robots in a trans-human future.

The Sci-Fi Orwellian Alliance of IT and Big Pharma – Controlling Our Minds and Bodies

The ever-strengthening alliance between the IT and medical industries (accelerated by COVID) weaves together the perfect ingredients for a techno-totalitarian takeover – one  controls our bodies, the other controls our minds  and as they become ever-more tightly entwined, both are controlling both. We become the mental and physical puppets of the doctors and spin-doctors, the power accrued between them pulling the strings in every domain of our being - our minds, our bodies, and our lives. Increasingly, they call the shots (literally, under our skin, with vaccines and impending quantum-dot injected tattoos) and we have no choice but submit.

IT expertise and medical experimentation, such as we seeing today, with vaccines being developed at warp-speed, promoted by IT billionaires, make a deadly combination – certainly not a combo that works for our well-being, but their own burgeoning bank accounts. The magnates of these industries, who have been steering the pandemic agenda from the inception, show sky-rocketing profits, while the public serves as guinea pigs for their self-serving agendas, with unproven technologies that put us at risk, from deregulated industries legally exempted from litigation and protest.

The combination of IT and the pharmaceutical/medical industry is a potent, and total, one, when it comes to the potential for totalitarian takeover. This is so for many obvious reasons (high-tech tracking, globally enforced vaccines that alter our genes,  injections implanting our biodata under our skin, just to name a few) but also because it’s not the form we’re used to totalitarianism taking, so we don’t recognize it in the making. In fact, what is happening now is unprecedented, and precisely because it is so, it’s able to slip through easily, without people rising up, taking notice and protesting.

Ironically, because we do not spot the usual red-alarm signals associated with fascism of the past (moustaches, goose-steps, flags flying) this new high-tech form, with such dystopian sci-fi technology we can’t even believe it exists (“must be a ‘conspiracy theory’”!) is even more invasive, invidious and complete. And it’s being rammed in “at warp speed”, before we can even realize what’s happening, or do anything to stop it, before it’s a fait accompli.

With the advanced technologies of high-tech late-stage capitalism, and now with the pandemic, the perfect justification to violate human rights and freedoms in the name of public protection, both the IT and medical industries are particularly well-placed to control the entire global population, politically, economically and medically -- a tightly woven meshwork of control that once in place, will become virtually impossible to escape. It is we, the people, who must decide that we will not accept this, before it is too late.

Why am I going on about this in such insistent – and to some, no doubt, extreme – terms? Because we are living in extreme times, and if we are to survive them, we must take their pulse correctly. We must keep our eyes wide open, and see where we are going. They say the height of stupidity is to keep doing the same old things and expect the results to be different. If we don’t act boldly, step up with both the breadth and acuteness of vision needed, it is very likely we will not have another chance.

The great crises of our times – the pandemic, climate crises, racism and rising right-wing fascism – none of these will be addressed by this growing technocratic state in a way that actually makes things better, not worse. All of these sorry states of affairs got that way because of capitalism, especially as it advances – more of the same will not heal them, but take them further in the same direction, spinning the tangled web that entraps us tighter and tighter, faster and faster. We need an about-face, a whole new direction – learning from our mistakes, humbly taking in their most profound lessons, and growing in our inner wisdom, which will show us the way out.

Part 4

Neoliberalism on Steroids:
Is COVID a Vehicle For an Orwellian Sci-Fi New Order?

The World Economic Forum and the “Great Reset” Agenda

As we saw in Parts 2 and 3, just as neo-liberalism straddles the divide between red and blue, it straddles the divide between the “market” and “state” too. Neoliberal capitalism isn’t just government and isn’t just the market either – it is both and more: it is a larger, complex behemoth, that envelops both within its nexus of power, and extends beyond it. In its unabashed drive for “limitless” growth, it grows to subsume all other actors, capturing all within its order, subjecting all to its dictates.

It operates most directly, though, through particular international engines like the IMF, the World Bank and the World Economic Forum, a network of assorted “independent” billionaires, who nevertheless act in tight concert for their own common interests. The WEF, the super-wealthy jet-set who meet in Davos every year to set the global elite’s agenda, was also a major player at Bill Gates “pandemic simulation game” (Event 201) in October 2019, putting forth a plan they call the “Great Reset”. The “Great Reset” was designed to steer the future direction of capitalism, especially in response to the “predicted” COVID pandemic (the timing of the actual pandemic, only four months later, can certainly raise eyebrows, but we won’t go into that here!)

The “Great Reset”, as one might expect, given who designed it, is a vision of growing control by the elites, a tightening-up of their power to re-direct all aspects of our society, including population control and surveillance, genetic modification, geo-engineering, biometrics, robotics, etc. This would be an increasingly controlled and surveilled high-tech world, under their design and command, with no mechanisms in place for public consent or approval – in short, a techno-totalitarian state, with democracy thrown out the window. In the greatest sleight of hand of all, it is framed as a great “re-set” correcting the crises capitalism has induced (now too obvious to deny) but in fact it is only taking it to a higher order.

The super-wealthy technocrats are calling all the shots now – and unlike the traditional state, which has mechanisms in place to preserve democracy and human rights, they have no such mechanisms in place, nor any compunction about enforcing their own dictates, throwing public consent (and public interests) by the wayside. Indeed, why should they do otherwise? – in a capitalist, deregulated world, where money buys the ultimate power, they have become as gods, accountable to no one. These men are not elected officials – they have simply taken power in their own hands, dictating the course of our evolution, and are turning us into robots, mutants, without even the will to protest.

This is no conspiracy theory, or hidden agenda – it is all clearly laid out.  As the WEF itself attests, this is the window of opportunity for the Great Reset, that has been in the planning for years. And they will waste no time in seizing it: rush through the vaccine, at warp speed, backed by digital, biometric and eventual under-the-skin surveillance, let the chips fall where they may. They have no hesitation about using us all as guinea pigs – willing or unwilling – for their experimental, sci-fi technologies that alter our very RNA, genes and those of all future generations.

Those who, like Bill Gates, bridge both the IT and medical industries (though curiously, he has no medical training!) have hit the jackpot with the pandemic. It’s given them free rein to create a new digital/medical infrastructure, inextricably fused, to call the shots (literally) for the whole world -- tearing up, in one fell swoop, all the old social contracts, and profiting mightily from it. In this way the pandemic has become the perfect vehicle for the Great Reset…not accidentally either, for both have long been in the planning.

This is a perfect example of how the free reign of the super-wealthy in a so-called “free market” economy allows them to totally grab the reins, dictating a future for all of us that none of us would choose. So much for democracy – for late-stage capitalism, as we have seen, cannot co-exist with democracy -- in fact, by its own internal logic, cannot help but destroy it, veering into a fascist facsimile in its final stages.

Because the Neo-Liberal Consensus Has Shifted the Whole Political Spectrum Rightwards, Few Are Left to Protest This

Because the neoliberal consensus has shifted the whole political spectrum rightwards, few are left (in both senses!) to protest now as it launches into full blast. The pandemic, in addition, has provided the perfect catalyst, with most of the population lost in fear, shock and confusion, rendering them more vulnerable than ever to manipulation. Because so many have already long been sold the neoliberal bill of goods, it is easy to sweep them up now in its full-scale agenda, with only the far wings left to contest it.

As we have seen, since the 1980’s, the neoliberal consensus has shifted the whole political spectrum rightwards, taking most of the population with it. As its trajectory peaks now, this has left only the fringes to protest – the far-right, and the (now so-called) “far”-left (those stalwarts who actually haven’t shifted, but held true to the values the left once represented, resisting the general shift rightwards.)

What was once the “right” and “left”, then, have converged in a neo-liberal common ground, leaving only the far-right and far-left at the “far ends” to protest. Ironically, the “far”-left (which used to be the ordinary left) sees the present “centrist” consolidation of power (the “Great Reset” of the WEF, Bill Gates, the WHO, the corporate technocrats) as a dangerous intensification of neo-liberal capitalism, while the far-right sees it, conversely, from the other end of the spectrum, as a socialist/communist plot! Interestingly, both are dubbed “conspiracy theories” by the neo-liberal consensus, even though they come from opposite perspectives -- just to thicken the pot of confusion!

The Great “Conspiracy Theory” Debate – Sorting out the False from the True

The obvious contradiction between these two narratives (the Great Reset as a socialist plot or an amped-up techno-capitalist one) -- and the fact that both are dubbed, equally, “conspiracy theories” -- is indeed at first extremely confusing; until we realize that the WEF has deliberately masked their high-tech, re-doubled neo-liberal agenda under socially-conscious and “green” jargon, to enlist in its fold the (once sceptical) liberal/progressive left. So while it appears quite “progressive” on the surface (and thus the target of the far-right’s ire) it is really neo-liberalism on steroids (and thus the target of the ‘far’-left.)

The reason, then, that the Great Reset can be attacked from opposite sides is because it itself is two-faced, presenting a different appearance depending on from where one is looking. Its supercharged neo-capitalist agenda is masked by a liberal, “do-good”, socially-conscious façade, which allows it to be attacked as a “socialist” plot from the right, and a neo-capitalist one from the left!

Whichever way we slice it, however, it is not repairing the ills of capitalism – as it tries to pretend – but taking it to a whole new level.

The Great Reset is framed as course-correcting the flaws of capitalism, but in fact is taking them to a whole new order: the Fourth Industrial Revolution. This plan, with which the WEF explicitly aligns itself, far from reversing the ills of the earlier stages of capitalism, ramps it up even further – to a global techno-totalitarian order.

Ironically, if they succeed, this “new” world order could very well be the world’s final one, at least of civilization as we know it –– capturing, and crushing underfoot, the entire globe, people, planet and all. The scenario is not a pretty one, with climate catastrophes, fires, floods, pandemics, and endlessly “advancing” technology chasing the tail of its own disasters, right to the death – possible near-term extinction of the human species, along with the countless others we have already taken.

Critiques of the Great Reset, as of its allies Bill Gates and the WHO, are censored, as we have seen, by the social media, or smeared (along with some genuinely crazy agendas) as “conspiracy theories.” Left or right, right or wrong, all narratives except the neo-liberal consensus, are tarred with the same brush. Yet we need to take heed of the perspectives that take a critical eye to the present one. More than ever, we need to separate out the wheat from the chaff, the legitimate claims of real threats to our freedom, from the paranoid delusions and wild fantasies generated by the fear and chaos of the pandemic (not unexpected when people know something is terribly wrong, but don’t know what it is!)

As we have said earlier, this is not a question of red or blue, which otherwise appear to be so divided. Both sides have been contending for a takeover; totalitarianism of different stripes, but scratch those stripes and underneath is one tiger or another!  One could say that red and blue are contenders for that takeover, and, yes, we have our preferences – but the truth is that without a much deeper change, we will not avert disaster, both social and ecological. (In other words, it should not just be a question of which ship we want to sink with -- capitalism itself is the maelstrom.)

How Neoliberalism Is Spawning Rebellion from Both Ends of the Spectrum

Just to re-cap, and go deeper, there are three important points we need to recognize, to disentangle the current confusion:  1) Since the 1980’s, the whole political system has moved rightwards, with both the erstwhile liberal left and the conservative right converging in the neo-liberal capitalist agenda. (Though it began on the right, the liberal left quickly joined in, compromising their scruples for the soaring profits it promised and, apart from some progressive mavericks -- fortunately growing now -- they have never looked back).

2) Now that, with the pandemic, the neo-liberal agenda has intensified into the medical-martial surveillance state represented by Gates and the Great Reset, it has spawned protest from both ends of the spectrum, the far-right and far-left. Both are smeared equally by the neo-liberal centre as “conspiracy theories” – but in fact they are attacking it from opposite positions, the right-wing of the spectrum seeing it as a socialist/communist plot, the left as a neo-liberal capitalist one, ramped up to a higher order. (One sees it as an amplification of government control, the other of private interests – and in fact, as we have seen, they both are true – because there is no longer any difference!)

3) This, bewildering as it seems, has come about because the “Great Reset” itself is two-faced: framing itself in a do-good image of socially-conscious, sustainable green memes to placate the left, while in reality a wolf in sheep’s clothing – a beefing-up of the original neo-liberal project towards a global martial/medical police state. It is private corporate business interests, dressed up as stronger government for the welfare of the people – all moving in an ominous direction of high-tech control and surveillance, and loss of rights and freedoms of movement, free speech, protest, the right to make our own decisions over all aspects of our lives.

So, yes, we do need a “new normal” – but not this one – which is only the old normal (that led up to the crises in the first place) on steroids -- reinforced, re-branded, and ramped up to a whole new order!

As we have noted, what rebellion there is is coming from the fringes – the far-right and what is left of the left…but both of these are also now growing…For the pandemic, and the fault-lines it has exposed, have also incited new movements of protest, bursting out of both sides of the spectrum. The question is: will it swing us still further rightwards, or can a new left, with bold new vision, wide and inclusive, healing and revitalizing, emerge?

Part 5

War on Life, Or Serving Life? –
A Global Medical-Martial Police State, or a World of Care and Regeneration?

In the first half of this series, we were busy disentangling some core illusions that have led to the present crises. Now in the second half, with a clearer vista before us, we will look increasingly at the clues as to where we will find solutions. (Please bear with me, however, as we continue to disentangle some more illusions, because the two -- deconstructing the old, and reconstructing the new -- actually go together: stripping the old veils away, and revealing both the perennial truths behind them and new vistas for our future.)

We need to face our crises head on, in order to move forward with clarity and integrity, with open minds and hearts – reclaiming our powers of critical thinking, our freedoms and rights, determining the directions of our lives, individual and collective, in harmony and cooperation with each other and the natural world we are part of.

The truth is that the new global techno-capitalist martial/medical state on the rise now bears an alarming resemblance to plain old-fashioned right-wing fascism – only worse, because turbocharged to a whole new order by the highly sophisticated technology at its fingertips. Technology is both its cover (always dubbed as “progress”) and its passport to a total takeover, in a way that was never before possible. At the same time, it is also covered by a smooth, assuaging neo-liberal (and faux socially-conscious) façade -- strong-arm tactics cloaked in a benevolent, paternalistic veneer of caring for our well-being, that is at once transparently opportunistic and an Orwellian nightmare of a transhuman, dystopian future.

A major driver of the Great Reset on the horizon is artificial intelligence, being developed in laboratories beyond our ken, out of sight, by Big Tech and big business interests, eclipsing our own human wisdom, rights and democratic powers of decision over our own lives. We are conned into thinking this is best for us – but is it? Let us take a closer look…

Slaves of Artificial Intelligence – Or Masters of our Own Human Nature?

Artificial intelligence, in particular, is by definition unnatural; it is also inhuman, and as such easily veers towards the inhumane -- for how can what is inhuman conduce to the good of humanity, in harmony with our true nature? Are we already so addicted to (and distracted by) technology that we can no longer see this? Have we given our smarts to our “smart-phones” (and our “smart-cities” and “smart-homes”), already cyborgs (half-humans, half-machines), already so dumbed-down we can no longer see how we are allowing our humanity -- step by numbing, dehumanizing step -- to be sucked dry, sacrificed to our ignorance, our apathy and our greed?

Have we given over our human intelligence to the IT experts, nerds and robots – the twilight zone of AI -- and kissed our own good-bye? Have we forfeited our connection to the innate inner wisdom with which nature endows us, and handed it over to IT geeks and artificial technologies, that are totally out of touch with life, indeed on a warpath to conquer and destroy it?

In fact, they may try to conquer nature, but in the end she will have the last word. They may try to bend nature to their will, but she won’t break – she’ll fight back – and quite possibly break us in this process. Whose side do we want to be with this – hers or theirs? This is not something to sleep-walk into – it is high time to wake up: to reclaim our minds, hearts and lives, reconnecting with the wisdom and bounty that nature naturally bestows on us.

Synching Our Human Intelligence with Natural and Cosmic Intelligence

The subject of “intelligence” – human, artificial, natural, where we derive it from and how we use it – is a fascinating one, and one we would do well to give our full attention at this pivotal point in our evolution.  Some in the “transhuman” movement, a guiding direction behind the Great Reset and Fourth Industrial Revolution, would have us eventually downloading our human intelligence (the contents of our brains) into artificial intelligence (computers), making our physical human bodies and our dependence on nature redundant. (For more about the many other ways transhumanist aims are central to the Great Reset, you can get it straight from the horse’s mouth, the World Economic Forum website.)

This is not only a nightmarish scenario, but one that can only lead to a grotesque future, devolution, deformation and extinction. For it is exactly the other way we need to go – reconnecting our small human brains to the larger intelligence of nature, that has created them in the first place, and continues to inform and evolve them in infinite ways – if we are only open to receive them. And this takes an about-face in the modern Western conception of our relationship with nature, and our intelligence with hers -- whether we use it to try to conquer her, or learn from her, and expand into far greater knowledge of ourselves and the universe in the process. (Note that I say “modern Western” cultures – indigenous people have always known this intricate, intimate relationship with natural and Cosmic intelligence, and had rich, sophisticated “inner technologies” to cultivate and evolve it.)

Western scientific materialist culture thinks of “intelligence” as something contained in the human brain, but there is another “distributed intelligence” embodied by the whole of nature, the whole of the Cosmos – of which our human intelligence itself is only a subset, a tiny part. Yet this human heart-brain, if properly trained, is like a holographic node of that Whole, which can tune into the whole of natural and Cosmic intelligence, downloading it, moment by moment. This what shamans, sages, yogis and mystics have been doing for millennia in non-Western cultures. Their outer simplicity belies the profound intricacy of their connectedness with the higher intelligence of nature and the Cosmos; in fact, it is part of what allows it (a crucial point we Westerners, with all our material excess and clutter, would do well to take to heart.)

It is outer simplicity at the material level that allows us to develop the deep inner technologies that help us access nature’s own templates, accelerating our true evolution, the highest reaches of consciousness. Indigenous, Eastern and ancient cultures did not have complex outer technologies, but the complex inner technologies that outer simplicity gives ground to, and direct contact with nature, that feeds and informs us in subtle, infinite ways, both perennial wisdom and the evolutionary templates for our future. They understood a point we Westerners must learn now, about the relation between outer and inner growth: just as, at a certain point in adolescence, we stop growing physically but continue to mature inwardly, so we, the human race, as a collective, must now learn to do that.

This means we have to learn from nature, not try to conquer it with our own tiny brains, so blinded by their own short-sightedness and self-centredness, but enlarge them by opening,  wider and wider, to her Cosmic intelligence.  Actually we are always connected to that -- the quantum field that pervades us and all of nature at an energetic level -- but our minds are disconnected from it, off in their own stories, stuck in a past that no longer exists and a future that is only imagined. We Westerners have much to learn from indigenous and traditional cultures about how to engage our hearts and minds with the deeper fields of universal wisdom – spiritual, energetic, ecological, social, economic – that can re-connect us with each other and all life, and can guide us towards a truly regenerative future.

The Techno-Capitalist War on Life -- Our Bodies and Our Planet

The way the techno-capitalist system treats our bodies is exactly the same way it treats the Earth. Blitz them with chemicals, hack them and frack them, destroying the balance of nature by endless manipulation and extraction – then meeting the disasters caused (climate crisis and pandemic) with still more aggressive and unnatural interventions (gene-altering vaccines, geo-engineering, the grafting of nature and human beings to artificial intelligence).  In this most diabolical of vicious cycles, the more damage that is caused, the more profit is extracted -- spinning the spiral of escalating crises faster and breathlessly faster.

And this is precisely how the system derives its profits, to meet its imperative of endless growth -- by chasing the tail of its endless trail of destruction, as the super-wealthy rake in the billions off the suffering and devastation of people and planet.  In this way, capitalism feeds off its own crises, instead of trying to stop their causes -- for that, of course, it has little incentive. Despite its claims and pious posturing, it has no motivation to stop this deadly cycle, of endless consumption and destruction, which serves its own interests so well, siphoning off all wealth to itself, and increasingly absolute power to dictate the fate of others’ lives, and that of the entire planet.

Vandana Shiva calls this a war on life (Elisabet Sahtouris attests to the same) because it is precisely contrary to the way that life, in its natural state, flourishes and sustains itself. It is extremely ironic – for years it has been a commonplace to justify the downsides of industrial modernity by pointing to the epidemics, fires, floods, earthquakes, famines and droughts, the vicissitudes of nature, that plagued the people of the past -- but look around, we’ve got all that now – and amplified a hundred-fold, because of the very technology we have used to beat nature down! Today we are finally seeing this delusional trajectory coming to a peak, as nature hits back in a storm of fury, and the captains of technology try harder and harder to batten down the hatches (or up the ante!) wresting whatever profit they still can, in this last gasp as the Titanic goes down! (Only too late will they see that they themselves are also on it – unless, as some are planning – they escape to Mars!)

Our Bio-Systems, Eco-Systems, Ecological and Economic Systems are Inextricably Linked

We have said that how we treat our planet is exactly how we are treating our bodies (and minds as well, bombarded with toxic ideologies), in what has become a vicious feed-back loop, eroding life at all levels, both our natural and social systems. In fact our bio-systems (bodies), being a sub-set of our eco-systems (planet), are microcosms of those eco-systems and reflect the imbalances and disturbances within it. How we hack at the planet is how we hack at our bodies; how we frack our planet is how we fragment our bodies and minds, our physical systems and psyches.

Scientists say that the “microbiome” in our guts is now severely disturbed, giving rise to many diseases, chronic and acute, because they are devoid of the biodiversity of organisms that a healthy gut needs to function well. Why is this so? “As without, so within” – because that same biodiversity so essential to life has been destroyed in our environment, our land, our soils and the food we eat, likewise blitzed with toxic chemicals, herbicides and pesticides. We are what we eat – both physically and mentally – and what we are being fed (at every level, personally and systemically) is life-destroying, toxic.

In this same way, our immune systems are so weakened by artificial living and artificial medical interventions that we cannot withstand the new pathogens being released in our equally-disturbed environment, where big tech and corporate rapaciousness have breached the human-animal interface and unleashed a Pandora’s box of novel pandemics, through rampant encroachment on animal habitats and massive deforestation. In short, we cannot hope to override the highly intricate, intelligent, fine-tuned balance of nature without equally disturbing and destroying our own bodies and minds, overturning our lives at all levels, biologically, psychologically, ecologically and socially.

War on Life – or Serving Life? -- Which Future Do We Want?

The powers-that-be have justified their extreme measures during the pandemic as a heroic war against the virus, but they themselves have caused the virus with their long-standing war on life. And this is the deeper, perennial war of capitalism – for fighting life can only lead to life itself kicking back, in an ever-escalating battle of survival, where life has the final victory and we humans are defeated, having exiled ourselves from its protection. Wouldn’t we rather be on the side of life to begin with, aligned with its sustenance and support, instead of killing ourselves off through our endless greed and hubris?

Another confusion we need to debunk is that between technological and social “progress”. What would once (not very long ago!) have been considered outrageous violations of basic human rights can now take place, with barely a bat of the eye, under cover of technological “progress.” Ironically, under advanced capitalism, technological progress is itself at odds with a socially progressive vision, but few people catch this. In our tech-happy (and tech-addicted) society, any technological innovation is considered an “advance”, and its nature rarely examined, even when it is in fact eroding all genuine social progress, and pushing it into regression. In this way it technology has insidiously fostered regression to fascist authoritarianism, just under another guise -- smooth, slick and easily slipped through, unrecognized because unprecedented.

”Growth” past a certain point becomes malignant – and we have already long passed that. We cannot keep on growing, materially, financially or technologically, on a limited planet, with its own natural cycles of balance, restraint and renewal, that must be honoured and observed, without incurring our own self-destruction. We need to stop pumping up such artificial, unnatural growth, technological and economic, trying to keep ourselves afloat on a collapsing life-support system, and start putting our energies where they can make a difference: the growth of our inner wisdom, compassion and action to reverse the effects of the devastation we have caused and restore our sense of humanity, no less than our planet.

The time has come to start thinking for ourselves, to parse out the delusions we’ve been force-fed…From where do we take what (we think) we think? – or is it not what we think at all but what we’ve been programmed to think? Our ideas come from the media, the corporations and the government, who are all in league, committed to their own profits, not the people or planet’s well-being. The corporate world controls both the state and the media, and dictates what we think. We need only to think about this a moment, to wake up and take back our power – to start to think for ourselves!

Politically, economically, technologically, ecologically and biologically (coming closer and closer, right under our skin now), neoliberal capitalism is waging a war on life, an attack from all sides, at every level, both personal and societal. But deeper still, the roots of the problems are at the cultural and spiritual levels, our very worldviews, beliefs and perceptions about who we are as humanity, and our bigger relationships to the life all around us, visible and invisible.

It is telling that the virus which has so turned our world upside down is not even visible to the eye -- perhaps a deep invitation to look to further levels of life we have been previously blind to. In fact, it is at the deepest, inner unseen levels of consciousness and energy, deeper than the visible material dimension, that we find the deeper imbalance that has led to the crises, and from there that we must uproot it.

What our purely materialist cultures have destroyed in us, we must begin to recover – and that is not regression, but the only true progress, only true growth, that will save us. Indigenous cultures, and those that have been long oppressed and destroyed, yet retained their spiritual and humane basis, are rising up now to show the way.

Part 6

Without Inner Wisdom, We Lose Our Humanity – And Ultimately, Our Freedoms and Our Lives

Another False Dichotomy – Beyond the Materialist Blinders of both Capitalism and Communism

In addition to some of the core false dichotomies we have already dismantled, there is another critical point we have to get in order to make sense of our present crises. For even the deep divide that drove almost the entire last century -- between capitalism and communism/socialism – the “Cold War” opposition still entrenched in so many minds – is ultimately a moot one. Why might this be so? Because both sides of this dichotomy too share a common ground of delusion:  both are purely materialist, lacking any spiritual dimension. For whatever their other differences, in this both sides have been the same, and in both cases this same failing has been at the root of their downfall (communism in the 20th century, capitalism in the 21st.)
Why does an exclusive focus on matter, and none to spirit – all to outer, and none to inner – matter? In fact it is not such a mystery, but actually stands to reason. Without the richness of the inner domain to explore and be fulfilled by, people will always look to the outer domain to fill that inner emptiness, the unmet needs inside them. This in turn inevitably gives rise to greed, ambition, aggression, power-seeking and inequality, especially in a world of limited resources, for which, if some are over-greedy, we all need to compete (all the more desperately now, as they are rapidly depleting.)

We humans are, by our nature, seekers. If people are not taught to cultivate their inner growth, which in fact is limitless, they will inevitably look to limitless outer growth, which is not sustainable. This is not an inherent, irremediable fault in human nature. Whether our need for evolution and growth is a gift or a curse depends upon the depth of our culture, the worldview and education it gives us – in short, what it sees as the goal of our human journey, whether it is one of endless material acquisition or the growth of true wisdom.

When people lack both inner resources and outer resources, as is increasingly common today, they turn to violence, to scape-goating, to seizing or holding onto their sense of supremacy and privilege, entitlement, bankrupt as it may be. They take on leaders who epitomize these tendencies, who have been supremely successful at them. This is easy enough to see with Trump and his followers. They live in a country bankrupt of true values, and so have taken that fatal flaw to an extreme -- a paucity of true wisdom, along with any semblance of kindness, caring, compassion -- which cannot but lead to destruction.

Others, more moderate, in the country, may try their best to temper this, but unless their own wisdom, and depth of caring, is at least equal to the task, they cannot succeed. We need an inner revolution so profound it turns the tide – nothing short of that will do.

Fortunately, each of us has tremendous power in that regard, as only a small percentage of such people is needed to generate a critical mass. Each of us has enormous transformative power, far more than we think, if we access and express that wisdom inherent within us. Once we have cleared the boards of the delusions we’re enmeshed in, we can tap into that deep insight and guidance, see the world with fresh eyes. Only then can we apply it in action, in a way that can make a real difference, not just more of the same that has brought us to this point of crisis, but a renewal of inner vision that can bring true transformation.

If it is More Just, Equal and Sustainable, Why Has Socialism Failed So Far?

Unlike capitalism, socialism is for the people, and in its most democratic forms, of and by them too – why has it not succeeded, then, in the past, in prevailing over capitalism, offering as it does a far more just and caring, equitable alternative? I believe it may be because, like capitalism, it lacks this spiritual basis – the sense of a deeper meaning in life, and our inherent connectedness. Absent a culture that cultivates inner richness, outer greed, acquisitiveness and power-seeking take over; and there is no upper limit on this, because there is no inner balance. Capitalism fits this bill much better than socialism, and that could be why, in the run-off between two purely materialistic systems, it has so far won out. But now its time is running out too, as the resources it depends on are hitting rock bottom, the climate has gone wild, and we’re heading for catastrophic disaster.

Socialism, while in many ways more respectful of our interconnectedness, and the ethics and egalitarianism that suggests, explicitly rejects spirituality, at least in its Marxist form. And indeed spirituality, and certainly institutional religion, can be the opiate of the people, its power greatly abused. But it need not be that way, for genuine spirituality goes much deeper – into our inherent freedom, from the core illusion that only this material world exists, and that we are all only separate, disconnected material bodies. And without realizing that deepest freedom -- which is also our Oneness with all that is -- we are always in bondage, however much material wealth and freedom we may have on the outside.

Disentangling “Conspirituality”: Reweaving Genuine Spiritual Wisdom into Deep-Rooted Systemic Transformation -- a True Movement By and For the People

Many people have been bewildered by the new phenomenon of “conspirituality” – spiritual circles merging with right-wing “conspiracy theorists”, an unexpected conjunction. This trend has become particularly evident in the last months, as the pandemic exacerbates previously hidden fault-lines, and re-aligns new camps, throwing together some very strange and surprising bedfellows.

Alternative/Eastern spirituality, left-wing politics, and holistic healing (against invasive high-tech Western medicine) used to all go together; as did conservative religion, right-wing politics, and conventional Western medicine -- one seamless ideological-lifestyle package in each case. But now, under pressure of the pandemic and the extreme measures it is driving, they have split off and re-grouped, re-configured, forming new and strange permutations, e.g.: – 1) spiritual people who are right-wing but against the vaccine (and Big Pharma/Big Tech/Big Data/ the Great Reset); 2) spiritual people who are still left-wing but for the vaccine (and Big Pharma/Big Tech/Big Data/ the Great Reset) 3) right-wing, religiously conservative people against the vaccine but not generally holistic (and…you get it… etc.)

What might be behind this? I believe it may be because what has dropped out of the equation is the traditional “left”. Many spiritual people have gone to the right, because the left has no more place for them – first of all, because there is so little left left, with any kind of inspired vision, and secondly because even the left that does still exist, resists or rejects spirituality. The neo-liberal absorption of the left has driven a wedge between spirituality and leftist politics, which were, in the 60’s at least, much more closely aligned, in a vision of higher consciousness that also transformed our systems. Now all that has gone by the wayside, and some spiritual people, by default, are aligning with right-wingers, who, at least like them, are against the mainstream system (though spewing up alternatives that, unfortunately, are even more deluded and dangerous.)

The left – those who genuinely care about the welfare of people and planet – must embrace the spiritual dimension, must itself expand its horizons, if it is not to simply disappear into oblivion, or be overrun by the right. And it need not do so in terms of conventional religion or spirituality, but essentially a deep consciousness of our oneness and interconnectedness – with each other, nature and the whole web of life, visible and invisible, that sustains us -- the heart of true spiritual wisdom, whatever name it goes by.

What is Our Choice?

We need a grass-roots movement, perhaps even a global referendum, bringing together the people, from all walks of life, to make the decisions that serve us, and serve all of life -- do we want this “Great Reset” that Gates, the WHO and the WEF are foisting on us, without our consent, while suspending our democratic rights and freedoms – or do we want to choose what we want, for our lives and our future, for the sake of humanity and all life on Earth, for now and for all time to come?

It is our choice to make, but we must take it, before it is taken from us.

The Covid pandemic, and an election that offers tepid hope at best, as we careen into a disastrous future – is an enormous wake-up call. But are we hearing the alarm call? Most, it seems, are just pushing the snooze button, over and over, hoping it will all just go away, brushing off the whistle-blowers dismissively as “alarmist.” This moment has been rightly called a window of opportunity – but for what, opportunism, or renewal?; a forced mutation of our genes by those who have themselves lost their humanity, or a genuine evolutionary leap, a quantum jump in human consciousness and the systems we live by? We must make that decision now, and come together to act on it -- before all our rights of decision and action are taken from us forever.

De-Colonizing Our Minds and Hearts to Make Our Own Free Decisions

“Information technology” is framed as being empowering, making information available to us so we can make our decisions with more choice and more freely, but in fact it is getting information on us, all the time, and using it to constantly manipulate our thinking, addicting us, unawares, to both depending on it to dictate our beliefs and desires, as well as the actual products it gets us to buy in the process. The “smarts” of our “smart-phones” are at the expense of our own, diminishing our ability to think for ourselves, to make our own decisions; the “smarter” they get, the stupider we do. We ourselves become the robots they surveille and control, every aspect of our bodies, minds, lives, dictated and monitored by command central, ourselves no less robotic than the devices they work through.

Our “smart-phones” are smart because they spy on us all the time, as will our “smart-homes” and “smart-cities” – a state of inescapable surveillance and control, in both the most public and private settings -- and we are pretty dumb if we don’t see this! We need to take back our power before we become complete automatons in their hands -- or, with their devices actually implanted in our hands, cyborgs, so fused with them we can’t see the difference.

The truth is many are already too dumbed-down to see where we are heading – their smart-phones having already blasted their brains with distraction, denial, confusion, information overload, fake news, equally biased “fact-checks” injecting us with the approved party line -- the fallout of our digitally- engineered, deliberately-induced era of “post-truth”. There is no scale this vampirization won’t reach to, from the very DNA in our cells (already being genetically modified by the vaccine) to our devices, homes, cities and the entire globe.

The Internet – which was supposed to be a platform for democratic free speech – is fast becoming an Orwellian Big Brother, telling us what we should think and censoring what we shouldn’t. First it sowed a perfect storm of confusion -- so we could no longer think for ourselves -- and now it tells us exactly what to think -- reining us in, with suppression and fact-checks, battening down the hatches, tauter and tauter, as we go down on its megalithic global Titanic.

Being Beacons of Light in the Darkness

This is a huge turning-point – which way do we want it to turn, for us or against us? It is up to us not to turn away, not to turn our eyes, but decide – to bring light into the darkness that is descending so quickly now, or allow it to consume us. The events that take place in our lives and our world are outer representations of what is going on in our souls; and either way, there is no place to hide. Which way do we want to go with this – self-deception unto death (not only of our physical lives but our humanity and freedom) or true liberty, of spirit, body and mind, taking our fate in our own hands?

When crises reach this magnitude – but also the larger unseen forces carrying us – it is actually easier to rise to them than sink with them, struggling, fighting, flailing – and a lot more exciting, inspiring, even joyful too! As we come together to support each other in this, we can transfigure ourselves and our world…an evolutionary explosion of the light that lies deep within us -- love, compassion, caring, freedom and true wisdom. Whether it is our last gasp, or a whole new beginning (and it may well be both of the two) we can meet it with magnanimity, courage, strength of spirit, grace and beauty – it is up to us to choose.

Part 7

Science and Big Tech are Not the Solutions – Holism Is, and Natural Wisdom

Science and Big Tech are, patently, not the answers to the crises they’ve caused – they will only cause more of them! The answer, just as patently, lies in holism, and nature’s own deeper wisdom, that drove evolution successfully for billions of years before we humans interfered with it (the tragedy – though still salvageable – of the Anthropocene!)

Science dissects, divides and attacks, hacks, fracks and jabs – holism heals, balances and unites, unifying diversity in synergy. Holism also embraces the science and knowledge that is useful, benevolent, that serves life rather than destroys it. As we have said earlier, technology itself is not the problem, it is how it is used, for what motives and in what larger political/economic context. A holistic perspective does not deny science, but takes what is sustainable; what is genuinely helpful, what honours, cooperates with and supports nature. We would call this, in broader terms, the science (knowledge) of holism, which embraces all knowledge that serves life with reverence and sacredness, and helps it grow and flourish.

“Science” as the Solution -- Another Delusion We Need to See Through

We are being told now, especially with respect to the pandemic and climate crises, that “science” is the solution. People are either “pro-science” (i.e., “rational”) or “anti-science” (“irrational”), the latter being dangerous or fools. But there is a lot to parse out here too, as we have seen with the other cases of black-and-white polarities so common today. Follow what “the science” says, we are told -- but first of all, what do we actually mean by “the science”? Because (though science is meant to be “neutral”) lots of scientists say different things, and often it is related to their own economic position and political views, and the economic forces funding them (or, in other cases, when their conscience grows louder, that they have the courage to break with).

“Listen to the science”, as the great climate-heroine, Greta Thunberg, says, can indeed be used as a clarion call to the truth, especially in the context of the climate crisis, to repudiate climate denial. But science, and the high-tech, high-carbon world it has given rise to in our hyper-rapacious capitalist system, has also given rise to the crises, destroying the balance of nature and throwing it into chaos. Even the vast majority of scientists (previously reticent) are now acknowledging that, with the evidence, studies and graphs to prove it – and in that sense, yes, absolutely, we must listen to the science.

But notice that basically here science is saying that its own by-product, big tech, has been the cause of the crises! So as far as solutions go, it becomes another question – more high-tech, geo-engineering, etc., clearly is not the answer, will only spin the spiral of already-escalating crises faster, racing in the same direction that has already brought us to the brink of disaster. Why should we listen to the science, and the same high-tech technocrats, who have engineered (wittingly or unwittingly) the crises in the first place? To do that is truly irrational, spinning the vicious cycle of tech-solutions causing deadly problems, calling forth even more deadly solutions, faster and faster, ever more disastrously, spinning out of control. That is truly unscientific -- given what we already know, to act like we don’t know it!

So we need not to be either just “pro-science” or “anti-science”, point-blank, but parse out, in each case and context, what it actually means -- what it is actually saying, and the role it is playing, whether for good or the opposite, beneficial or deleterious; whether it is for public well-being or simply private profits. We need to unpack what different scientists are saying, and for what reasons, in what contexts, and what motives lie behind them. “Science”, depending on how it is used, can be used to support left-wing causes, right-wing causes, and certainly the causes of mainstream neo-liberal capitalism, and everything in between. In this way, “the science” is theoretically neutral and “objective”– but in practice, very rarely so!

This is true as regards the pandemic too, even especially so. For the pandemic, as part of the climate crisis, was also caused by high-tech’s violent disruption of nature’s balance, through rampant deforestation and human encroachment on animal habitats, driving pathogens like the coronavirus across the animal/human interface. Yes, valid science attests to this, yet now again we are looking to more science and high-tech solutions – synthetic, gene-altering vaccinations, amped up tracking, invasive surveillance – rather than stopping the causes, which have come from high-tech’s supremacy in the first place! Why is it that we are not learning our lessons – or is it that certain forces profit from us not learning them, and turning to them, helpless, for their answers, instead?

One of the reasons for all the confusion is not only that the issues themselves have become, as they mushroom, much more complex – but that public relations techniques and technologies have become incredibly sophisticated (technically and psychologically), and especially adept at insidiously co-opting the jargon and memes of the other side to the purposes of their own agendas. Black-and-white polarizations, with each usurping each other’s memes, is especially powerful rhetorically for sowing confusion, and getting people to act, unknowingly, against their own interests – and many latch onto them easily, desperate for a life-boat in the midst of all the complexity (some of it itself very genuine, and some deliberately engineered to those ends!)

Scientific Materialism, Capitalism and Big Tech – A Lethal Alliance in the War against Life

Many look around today and see only chaos, but there is a very logical progression that has led us to this stage. (One could also say “inevitable” -- and that indeed has been loudly proclaimed -- but only inevitable within the logic of capitalism, not in life or nature itself -- whose logic is actually quite opposite!)

This fatal logic of capitalism is in fact dead-simple. Capitalism demands perpetual growth, which demands perpetual innovation, which demands perpetual de-naturalization. That means capitalism is in perpetual war with life, an ever-accelerating battle against life, which it can only win by destroying itself, and as much of life as it can in the process – ultimately, the human race waging that battle loses everything, and life itself wins out (in whatever forms survive the fray, or revive when humans are out of the picture.)

Sounds grim, and hopeless, you might say…and yes, if we continue on our present course, this scenario may indeed be inevitable.  But, as I say, it need not be so – if we learn our lessons on time, lay down our arms, and come over to life’s side – holism: honouring the whole of life, in celebration of our interconnectedness, cooperation and communion, joy and beauty.

Holism is the Most Powerful Healer – Biologically, Ecologically and Socially

The other side of this absolute supremacy of white male Western science and technology is a lack of respect, indeed active repression, of holism and holistic healing, and other forms of knowledge (“science”, etymologically, means simply “knowledge” or “knowing”). Holistic solutions for the coronavirus (and there are many, preventative as well as curative) have not only been ignored, as if they don’t even exist, but actively censored. This has been true of “science’s” (and the Western medical industry’s) relationship to holistic and natural healing in general, but even more aggressively and dramatically in the pandemic.

In the context of the pandemic, “listen to the science” means only one thing – get the vaccine: vaccines are the solution, along with whatever other draconian measures are needed to impose only Western, high-tech approaches on the public, whether or not they agree to it (and many individuals, and cultures, do not – or would not, if they were given any choice!) (This is not even to mention that if we’d been following holistic approaches in the first place, in our ways of treating our bodies and the land, we would not have had this pandemic at all, much less be subjected to such authoritarian, invasive “solutions” – yet most just meekly bow their heads, go along and take their “jabs” like sheep!)

Holistic approaches are predicated on keeping the balance, or bringing back balance when it is disturbed, to interconnected systems, the bio-systems of our body and our wider eco-systems. They recognize and work with the inherent inter-relatedness, wholeness, of all life – that our bodies and our planet, our bio-systems and eco-systems, work in symbiosis and synergy, with each other and indeed all other forms of life, human and non-human, in webs of personal, planetary and even cosmic influence and connection.

Holistic modalities are all about restoring balance, while Western high-tech medical and environmental approaches seem hell-bent on destroying it, perpetually throwing that balance out of whack, ostensibly for humans to gain the upper-hand, their own advantage. But life does not work that way, and we are part of life -- so our efforts to subdue her boomerang; we hoist ourselves on the petard of our own greed and hubris.

There are two simple laws of life: the more you defy nature, the more she will fight back; the more you cooperate with nature, the more she will support you. This is natural because we are part of nature – you can’t fight against yourself without getting defeated. We want to be on our own side, not make an enemy of our own nature.

At this point, nature has had it – she will no longer submit to men’s will. We shoot ourselves in our own foot when we try to bite the hand that feeds us – nature, the very source of life, without whose balance and wisdom we cannot survive, even exist in the first place!

Balance, Wisdom and Holism

If we drop into them deeply enough, all dualities and divisions dissolve into holism, and holism itself is not uniform, monolithic, but unity-in-diversity. In a healthy holistic system, the whole sustains the parts and the parts sustain the whole, in a reciprocal flow between essence, at the core, and all its own diverse forms in their expression and evolution. Unity and diversity celebrate each other, in an infinite flow of creation, dissolution and the emergence of new potential; an infinite flow of pure potential taking ever-new permutations, in a spiral of life that is mutually nourishing, generative and regenerative, limitlessly creative.

We have spoken throughout this piece about the polarities that divide us. If we see life through the lens of separation and division (as Western perspectives often do, whether scientific materialism; competitive, self-profit driven capitalism; white male supremacy, etc.) we drive these polarities ever faster and harder on a path of self-destruction, precisely to the breaking point we have arrived at today. If, on the other hand, we see life through the perspective of holism and interconnectedness, we seek to join together with others to find the common ground that can make life flourish for us all, and the greater web of all life.

Two sides of a duality do not have to clash in conflict, but can meet in a way that is mutually transforming. Whenever there are two sides, there is a third wider space that can see both and engage them, find the common ground or allow the synergy between them to play, or in which the edges between them meet and melt away. In this lies both the dissolution of the conflict, and the potential solution. Sometimes the solution arises as a new emergence, sometimes it rests in the dissolution itself; either way there is new freedom, freshness – an openness to the vastness of life, its potential and kinetic energies, recycling into each other in infinite permutations.

We can also see that dualities exist on a multiplicity of scales, and that they can also be seen, in this way, as nested wholes of unity-in-diversity, always inviting integration and balance, synergy and union, at a higher level. Seeing them in this way gives us a much greater space to play in, widening the freedom of movement, elasticity, expansion and growth of our identities and relationships, allegiances and alliances, beyond their fixed divisions and boundaries, opening up the potentials for new alignments and movement.

This is true even of the polarity, the tension, happening in these tumultuous times, between destruction and creation themselves. In a sense, the new creative possibilities of these times lie within the destruction that, like seeds broken open, allows new possibilities, new horizons in our evolution, to blossom.

Extreme polarization, fragmentation, can lead either to self-annihilation, a dead-end, a hole; or holism, renewal, a return to the Whole. In fact it can, paradoxically, lead to both, for one calls forth, makes space, for the other. There is a symbiosis and synergy even between creation and destruction, birth and death, mystery and revelation, a cycle or spiral of evolution, circling between and weaving together its own play of oppositions, dualities. An alchemy, transmutation, can emerge from this crucible, the fire of extreme creative friction -- a Phoenix of new life, rising from the ashes of death (or perhaps we should say near-death, because nothing in this universe is ever totally destroyed, just transformed into new forms, new permutations, fractals of the hologram of the Cosmos.)

A cycle is over, a rise and fall, itself a natural rhythm. And, as in nature itself, something else can rise from this – what it is depends upon our vision and our choices. Let us take the uncertainty, the unknowing, of the present moment, dive deep into its centre, the eye of the storm, and retrieve from it renewed potential, the possibility for a new and very different future. Knowing that it is in the in-between spaces, between the frames of reality we take (and make) as true – that the deepest meaning, and the greatest changes, can arise and break through.

(And for those who despair, there is also great grace in knowing that, whatever happens, the return to the Whole is inevitable -- perhaps the only thing that is, besides taxes and death! – because ultimately we have never left it, and our evolutionary journey is to that revelation itself! This is not, let it be said however, a grounds for passivity, a failure to play our part in the Whole because ultimately it doesn’t matter; but rather an invitation to the deepest ground of our being and of the Whole of creation, energizing our highest desire to serve that Whole, fuelled by the knowledge that we are that Whole, as well as of our own role in it, unique and co-creative.)

This recognition of holism, balance and interconnectedness -- the reciprocal flow between the parts and the whole -- and its fundamentality to the survival of life, much less its thriving --  applies at every scale, every level, but its most fundamental basis is spiritual, in our very consciousness. This is perhaps the level we can least afford to ignore; as we shall see in Part 8.

Part 8

The Core Division We Need to Defuse –
The Split Between Consciousness and Matter, Being and Doing

There is a fifth point too, still deeper, another false dichotomy we need to see through. For, in order to be truly fulfilling, spirituality itself needs to bridge the gap between the worldly and transcendent dimensions. Indigenous and ancient cultures knew this but today we separate the two – the spiritual and the material; and even when we acknowledge the spiritual, we fail to see how intricately interwoven are the two, how pure consciousness, what we could call the transcendent, permeates this world of matter, inseparably interconnected.

Yes, Earth-spirituality needs to be cultivated more than ever today, but we also need to honour and draw upon that transcendent dimension, the invisible unified fields of Consciousness and energy in which we are all connected, that underlie and pervade all of visible nature (including our own physical bodies) -- the dimension that is both the template of our evolutionary journey and our eternal home. Perhaps this is the last “divide” we must cross on our way to true fulfilment – that stands between us and the full realization of the limitless richness, potential, of our being, and that of the greater collective – nature, culture and Cosmos.

Spirituality and the material world cross-fertilize each other: spirituality irrigates the material world, and the material world is the ground on which spirituality flowers. They are mutually interdependent, the world of matter making manifest the beauty of the spirit of being that animates and sustains us, so interwoven we cannot separate them. And when we try to do so, our life on Earth withers and dies – unless we have a near-death experience, as we are all, in these crisis-torn times, facing as a collective now – waking us up to our true nature, and the exquisite, intricate beauty of its infinite interconnectedness.

We need food, we need oxygen, to survive, but there is something deeper still that sustains us, even beyond life and death. We need material sustainability, and we need this deeper force that also sustains us – especially now, when we need all the help we can get to revitalize, resurrect, and re-enchant our world.

What is happening on the outside is what is happening on the inside – our loss of connection with the source of life that sustains us, and the greater, infinite web of creation, throughout time and space, and beyond, it supports. That source is within each of us, like a holographic node through which we connect with the whole, the whole web of life, human and non-human, on this planet and beyond it. More than ever, we need to find that source within us today, and draw on its wisdom and beauty, ride out its waves of power and inspiration, to resurrect, renew and transmute our world, infusing our life on Earth with the presence, grace and guidance of other dimensions, that exist in and through us.

Consciousness and Matter are Inextricably Intertwined

As we delve deeper and deeper in the layers of illusions that beset us, now we are coming to the crux of it. For behind the divide between materialism and spirituality, lies the still deeper divide between spirit and matter that plagues our modern age. That divide is also false, of course, like the others we have examined, another man-made, mind-made division. In fact, that split between spirit and matter, consciousness and its own diverse expressions, lies at the root of all other divisions, and the proliferation of conflict and crises, run riot now in our world.

First, let me make clear that when I say “spirit” I am referring, in modern terms, to consciousness (the invisible web that bonds us when the false layers of divisions are stripped away) – a universal, unified field in which all phenomena play, from which all subjects and objects emerge in tandem, diverge, interact, converge and return. From this perspective all polarities are simply the play of one unified essence, interacting with itself in a grand panorama of time and space. When we see this, all oppositions collapse, and expand into one vast, boundless essence -- the eternal in its infinite expressions – formation, transformation, dissolution and re-emergence in new forms. When the mystics (and quantum physicists) speak of “oneness”, it is to this they are referring.

Consciousness (or that Cosmic expanse of oneness) is the field in which unity appears to separate, interface in myriad forms, diverge, transform, re-converge. We can call this the quantum field, or quantum consciousness itself, in which everything is connected, the diverse play of one essence in infinitely creative forms; each arising in interdependence upon, and co-creating, the other. In this unity, the polarities call each other into existence, but when this is seen through (the veil having grown transparent), disappear, vanish into each other, revealing their apparent division as ultimately illusion, a magic show in thin air.

Without our mind-made divisions, super-imposed on the undivided field of potential from which life arises, no duality would exist, nor power dynamics, nor conflict. It really goes as deep as this – and is also the deepest root from which our rifts need to be addressed. Spiritual wisdom gives us access to this wider, boundless expanse, the Oneness of the whole Cosmos itself with the Consciousness that underlies it, and allows us to heal into Wholeness, our true nature all along.

The Tension between Being and Doing – In Our Hyper-Aggressive, Big-Tech Age, Masculine Values Have Swamped the Feminine

The real dualism, at the core of all those that have proliferated in our world, if we strip back all the confusion that has masked it, is between being and doing: our essential eternal nature and its expression in action. We can characterize this as the feminine and masculine, soft and hard, human or machine, inner and outer values, receptivity and agency – or, in today’s terms, the trade-off between the quality of life, happiness and fulfilment; versus the quantity of goods and wealth produced and accumulated (the metric of GDP!) Again, one might see this as the dichotomy between consciousness and matter, inner or outer focus: awareness of the inner web that connects us all, or individual self-interest and ambition.

In each case, in our hyper-materialistic, muscular, aggressive capitalistic age, the latter has taken over, swamping the former. Yet without the former – the inner values, the primary feminine values of wisdom, connection and caring—life is not worth living, indeed cannot even be sustained. In our ruthless ambition for “more and more” we have reached the point of diminishing returns, soon to be no return. For if we continue in this direction, we will likely lose our lives altogether – after our freedoms, rights, power and humanity -- mesmerized by our myopic self-interest and endless blind-sided acquisitiveness.

Life is, in general, a fluctuation, a dance, between the two poles, the yin (soft, spacious, diffuse, open) and the yang (focussed, pointed, ambitious). But now the yang has taken over, big-time, in every domain, and so if we don’t change our ways the opposite will kick in, in just as big a bang -- our total self-destruction, dissolution. We need the creative friction, and ultimately balance, between yin and yang, being and doing, stillness and action, to find true unity in our being, and harmony, peace and renewal in our society. We have rent them apart in the modern age, and crushed the yin in harsh hierarchies, destroying the exquisite, finely-tuned and intricate synergy that exists in all natural systems and sustains life itself.

Life is always trying to create a balance between these two forces – if we swing too wildly in one direction, the other inevitably kicks back, with equal and opposite force. If we gorge ourselves too gluttonously on the gifts life gives us, without gratitude or restraint, life itself will be withdrawn; if we do not sustain what life has given us, she will no longer sustain us.

And this is exactly what we have done – and are still doing – in our global culture. We must learn to do with less on the material plane, be grateful and honour what we have, and cultivate our inner treasures, the deepest gifts that life has given us –  to regenerate our life on Earth, inwardly and outwardly, to witness the beauty of this Cosmos with the gift of Consciousness that has been so miraculously bestowed on us – to celebrate and sanctify it, not demolish it with our aggressiveness, our defensiveness, or our greed; to honour, revere and delight in her mysteries, rather than try to vanquish or fear them. If we celebrate life as beholders of – and channels of -- her beauty, rather than consumers of her goods, the good will return to our lives a hundred-fold, along with truth, wisdom and healing.

There are amazing, intricate patterns going on in nature, including our own bodies, that we just bulldoze over, mentally and physically, instead of honouring and learning from them, about ourselves, the universe and our place in it. The whole of nature, the Cosmos, and even our own bodies, is all about symbiosis, relationships, the webs of connection through which each part is supported, and supports the Whole. Yet we bulldoze over all of that, in the name of our self-profit and progress – and of course it brings the opposite, our own self-destruction, because we are part of the Whole, never separate; we ignore that at our lethal peril, hoist ourselves on our own petard of arrogance, exceptionalism and hubris.

By dismantling old, obsolete divisions, we can then re-weave new connections, truer to the reality that we are part of an interrelated Whole, an interwoven collective of life that itself is forever unfolding, and that we need to look after that Whole if it is to sustain and support us, animating our own evolution as well as that of all life. Ancient cultures knew this, but Western culture is young, and only just learning that critical lesson now (unfortunately, the hard way!) We Westerners would do well to take guidance from our elder sisters and brothers; they may live more simply but in some respects they are far more sophisticated than we are (in fact simple living is a part of that critical wisdom!)

Getting Over “Power-Over” Others and Nature; Getting with “Power-With” the Whole

The time has come for indigenous and other long-oppressed cultures to express their power outwardly, and Westerners to start learning to source their power from within. This would bring the greater balance which is so much needed, within us and without us, shifting both the internal and external power dynamics which now have us teetering on the brink of collapse and extinction.

Being, consciousness, is a gift, with endless depths to cultivate, the source of our unity with all that is, and our eternal true nature. When we forfeit this to endless striving, self-interest, profit and ambition, we lose all joy and purpose in living – and the counterfeits inevitably collapse, bringing down our top-heavy systems, and forfeiting our very lives themselves.

Instead of living in balance and cooperation with each other and nature, Westerners have lived too long in modes of aggression and defence – divisive dynamics and the escalating vicious cycles they cause, calling forth and egging on each other, in a spiral of division and conflict. These aggression/defence dynamics exist within us internally in our psyches, our interpersonal dynamics with others immediately around us, and our larger societal patterns, at the cultural, ecological, economic and political levels.

Technology itself is not the problem – in the right context, used wisely and with pure intent, it can genuinely serve the good of people and planet. But in the wrong context – an economic system based on self-profit and greed – it is destined to become a source of destruction, of imbalance of power, injustice. As far as technology is concerned, the economic systems in which it is embedded, and the motives behind it, crucially determine whether it is used for good or ill. And the economic system, in turn, is determined by the values of the culture, and the motives for living it instils -- whether caring for the greater good of the whole, or simply rampant self-interest.

Our present global economic system, neo-liberal capitalism, has veered about as far as possible, in its values, intentions and structures, from serving that greater good of the Whole. We may think we can get away with each man chasing his pot of gold, serving only his own self-interests, but the truth is – as nature is insisting so starkly now – if we don’t serve the greater good, all of us are goners! We can’t escape our interconnectedness, nor is it even in our interests to want to, because it supports our own highest good -- is the indispensable basis for our own happiness and thriving, both our individual and collective evolution, growth and well-being.

The pandemic, and the climate crisis and eco-social collapses of which they are a part, have flung us on a crash-course – but will we simply crash, or wake up from our long sleep-walk with self-destruction and course-correct in time? In the form of a disaster, life is handing us a life-line – will we take it with grace and reverence, gratitude for the lessons learned, or will we simply go down, writing ourselves off as a lost cause, nature’s experiment gone wrong? We can go either way with this – or come to the dawning of the light through a very long dark night -- it is up to us to decide.

Part 9

Disentangling the Deepest of All Delusions, Duality Itself:
Coming Home to our True Wholeness

So now we come to the deepest level of the many-layered web of delusions we have been disentangling:  duality and division itself. It is this core delusion (the separation between our “self” and the “world”) that has led to our disconnection from each other and nature, as well as our own true essence, the universal Source of creation, giving rise to exponentially growing fragmentation and our exploding crises.

Our consciousness in Western culture, and consequently, our systems – social, ecological, political and economic – are predicated on the central delusion that plagues the human condition: division – that we are separate from each other, from nature, from the seen and unseen forces that sustain us. This is our deepest delusion, the core delusion from which all the others have sprouted, proliferated and grown, until we have arrived at our present state of untenable crisis -- not just peak oil but peak fragmentation, unsustainable depletion of both inner and outer resources -- culminating in multi-systems breakdown.

It seems to be a many-headed crisis, a monstrous Hydra of so many faces we can’t make any sense of it, but at the root of all this complexity lies this one single delusion.

The belief in our separateness – the failure to see that we are connected in any essential inner way to the outer world and others around us – is what makes us reach out so desperately to fulfil ourselves – hence the endless outer grasping, insatiable aggression, extraction, acquisition, exploitation of modern Western society. And it has spread the tentacles of this insatiable avarice around the entire planet, knocking down other cultures and nature in this last gasp of un-tethered, relentless “globalization.”

Hyper-individualism – the conviction that we are separate, and must all compete with each other, fending for ourselves, aggressing and defending our territory, our claims to resources, wealth and power – leads inevitably to an insatiable inner emptiness and insatiable outer greed. Our lives become a battlefield between deep deprivation and obsessive power, the will to control, constantly thrashing it out, both within and without us. How can peace and happiness, fulfilment, exist under such conditions?  It is plain to see that they cannot.

Being and doing, yin and yang, consciousness and matter, spirit and action… All divisive dynamics grow out of that core duality – and that duality itself stems from a still deeper root of unity – so all apparent divisions are ultimately delusive, shadow-plays of one light. There is the Whole and the part that appears to depart from it, but in fact it never can; it is only a sleight of hand. We are all expressions of one unified field of Consciousness, of energy -- and all of our surface dualities, hierarchies, power-struggles, divisiveness – are based on that illusion of separation that doesn’t really exist. Quantum physics attests to this, and wisdom spiritualities can help bring it into our own direct experience: the essential unity of our being, the oneness of our consciousness with the whole cosmos -- our intimate, inextricably-interwoven connection with the entire web of life, and even beyond life and death.

Paradoxically, this realization gives us enormous power to change things, and at the same time we don’t need any power, or to change things, because, at the deepest level, we already home. We are home-free, and also freer than ever to change things, because we are not hooked into one side or the other, but serving, freely, the Whole. And the Whole in turn supports us, because whenever we serve life, life serves us as well; we have the whole force of evolution behind us, and with us, flowing through and transforming us as we transform the whole. In this, we are at once fluid, free and everywhere at home.

Outer Growth Past its Limits Becomes Malignant – Time to Grow Our Inner Wisdom

Our material evolution has led us to the point where we must begin to appreciate the non-material things in life – the deeper unseen levels of connection between us, and with all of nature, the whole web of life on Earth and the Cosmos, behind them and beyond them. There are deep fields of consciousness and energy that lie within us, that we can access, but we have to first acknowledge their presence and honour their sacred essence, if we are to unpack their richness, to soar on the evolutionary heights to which they can take us.

Our societies, and lives, are bereft, not only because they are so hyper-individualistic, disconnecting us from each other and nature, but because they are also godless, with “God” as an object, out there, we worship in churches or temples (or not at all), rather than a deep sense of peace, belonging, joy and beauty that is inextricable from our own being. Without this life is only a matter of matter, shuffling it around, extracting it and amassing it. We miss the vastness, infinite potentiality, that is our essential birthright and our eternal true nature.

We must move beyond greed to caring, self-centredness to open-heartedness, excessive individualism to knowing ourselves as the Whole, existing on many dimensions.  Greed and self-centredness have taken over in our modern world, in different styles and stripes, some more obvious and some more disguised, some on small scales and some on large, eclipsing the perennial human values of love, connection, compassion and wisdom, so essential for our happiness and well-being, individually and as a collective.

Transforming Toxic Power Dynamics into Harmony, Caring and Wholeness

Before we come to the end of this series, I would just like to review some of the themes we’ve explored, and to weave them together. We have stripped back some of the layers of the extremely divisive and destructive dynamics erupting in our world today; uncovered the deep illusions of duality and division behind them; and the still deeper unity, holism, at our core. I believe that, just as we have gotten from there to here, we can equally trace our way home again, to the true wholeness of our being: igniting a new phase in our evolution based not on deluded separation, but our true unity-in-diversity -- cooperation, caring, synergy, co-creation -- an inspired, visionary future.

But first we have to be clear about what is actually happening today, and have no delusions about that. The combination of an economic system that fosters unlimited greed, the capacities of technology to expedite that exponentially, and a global pandemic – a perfect excuse to violate human rights and freedoms, and censor any attempts to protest them – is a deadly combination indeed. It might not be a “conspiracy” per se – planned systematically, step by step, in toto, in advance – but it is certainly a convergence of factors that point in a single direction: a totalitarian techno-capitalist takeover.  And despite what they say, that it is inevitable, that there are no alternatives – there are, and very real ones – but we need to take them before it’s too late, seize the day while it’s still possible.

A one-world, totalitarian government led by billionaires chasing their own profits, and exploiting and destroying people and planet in the process – who would want this? -- no one but the billionaires, neither the traditional right (that abhors totalitarian communism) nor the traditional left (that abhors the equally totalitarian plutocracy of private business and corporate interests/.) As we have seen, the Great Reset on the horizon represents both – a global totalitarian order of the corporatocracy – the worst nightmare of both sides! So why is it that so few seem to be reacting? Because that order itself is censoring any protest or alternative narratives, and in that vacuum of free speech, critical thinking, and democratic rights of decision, aggressively pushing their own dominant narrative and grand agendas – and, to boot ramming them through at “warp speed”!

We humans like things black-and-white, good guys (us) and bad guys (them). But in this case, both of our seeming alternatives – right-wing fascism and neoliberal techno-totalitarianism – different as they many seem on the surface, are too much alike, in the ways that really matter – and neither offers any alternative to a catastrophic future. It is just a race between two contenders to see who can crash the world faster, while running off with the spoils! Insurrection from the one side; escalating surveillance, suppression and censorship on the other – neither will work – as each only incites the other to more of the same, in a vicious spiral of destruction that just keeps upping the ante.

It is Not True that “There Is No Alternative” – There Are Very Real Ones

There are real alternatives, however – many – and that’s where we need to put our attention and energy. Progressive, grass-roots movements are also rising – black, indigenous, women, youth – in the midst of this great debacle between the two big capitalist camps – and these are the stars we must follow if we are to turn our crises around and enter a truly new horizon, create a future worth living.

New memes and modes of living are jumping out at us, many of them updated versions of ones that worked for millennia. Climate justice, reforestation, agroecology, ecological and solidarity economies, local resilience, fair exchange, cooperatives and community living – led by coalitions of indigenous wisdom-holders, women, people of colour, elders and youth, fore-fronting the voice of the Global South and so-called minority groups (actually the majority!) At the same time, we must encourage these directions amongst our elected politicians (and more of us even become them!) -- working on all fronts, within and beyond the system, to create a regenerative, just and cooperative, thriving post-capitalist system.

Laws of ancient wisdom and modern quantum physics both converge now to tell us: where our attention and energy goes, the possibilities burgeon and grow; previously unsuspected potentials can open up and flow, when we ourselves open up to them. We need to show up, step up, and the next steps will keep coming, opening up new possibilities as we go – as exponentially as our two present camps are now hurtling us into breakdown. It all depends on where we put our focus, energy and efforts. From a wide view, on a clear day, we can see forever -- opening our eyes, after a long sleepwalk, and taking bold, decisive actions to embody a wholly new vision of who we might be, and what our world could look like.

In a multi-dimensional world of infinite possibilities, where we put our attention and energy determines what we get – we have much more power than we think we do. The “uncertainty” principle of physics – that how we see things depends on how (and where) we look – disorienting as it may seem at first, shaking up our old certainties, is actually very empowering, especially when those certainties are certainly not looking good! It actually works to our advantage, if we know how to use it.

The good news, in fact, is that in not knowing our future, it is not fixed, pre-determined – paradoxically, it is that very fluidity, openness, unknowing, that gives us the power to change it, to choose the kind of world we want to see, and be that change, not be forced into one that is not of our own making, that others are dictating for us. Seeing is believing, and believing is also seeing – when we draw on our inner wisdom to see what we want for future, and put all our heart into bringing it into being, we vastly augment the chances of its coming into manifestation.

As I say, we need to do this both from within ourselves, and within our systems and outside them.  So, along with our personal and local efforts, we also have to continue to push the leaders already in power, taking any opening we do find to move things in a positive direction, and make that opening wider. We need to get the hard-core exponents of fascism out, and at the same time prevent the rise of another kind -- neoliberal techno-capitalist “fascist-lite” (getting ever-heavier as it edges out the competition) -- promoting instead the most progressive forces we can find, within and outside of the system.

The Wholeness That is Our True Home

What is happening now is shaking us to our very foundations. And, upending as that might be, that is as it should be – those foundations were flawed from the very beginning. If we don’t get the message and change our ways, nature will get rid of us, shake us off this planet, like a fever burns off pathogens -- with pandemics, fires and escalating eco-social eruptions.  And that is exactly what is happening now: a tremendous wake-up call, and tremendous opportunity, that we have no option but to take, or we simply will not make it.

Can we move from the delusion of duality and division to our true home in Wholeness?

We can meet this choice-point with joy and not with fear, or transmuting our fear to the joy of knowing we can triumph over our own limitations. It is our liberation, our release, from the blinders and delusions of separation that have so long bound us, limiting our identities and the realization of our fullest potentials. Instead of losing our lives, our freedoms, we can find true life, true freedom, our own eternal, invincible true nature.

That is what is being asked of us – and given us – in this extraordinary moment: it is time to answer the call. Can we live up to the challenge -- and deliverance -- that is on offer – rising to our highest potentials, fulfilling the sacred covenant of our human journey on Earth? Can we move from the endless delusion of duality and division to the wholeness that is our true being, our redemption and our true home?
